Dearest Pop-Pop,
Though I was too young to remember much of you, I cherish and frequently recall the moments we did have together. I remember the days when all the cousins would come down the shore for awhile, and I would sit in the florida room with you and my dad as we set up a chain of 'Barrel of Monkeys'. You would take the chain and hang it off of the ceiling fan, turn it on, and I would laugh hysterically at the red plastic monkeys flying all over the room.
Small moments like these remind me of the person you were, and still are in our hearts and in heaven. A fun-loving, happy individual. A man's man, but still with a warm heart and a caring soul.
Now that I'm older, I've come to idolize and appreciate your vast knowledge of automobiles, and long to sit next to you as you tell stories of your Navy, Marine, and everyday life experiences. I also truly hope that one day, I last in a strong marriage and loving bond as you have with Mom-mom, and become a solid backbone of an extensive family as she and you have become.
I'm speaking for all of us when I say, Pop-pop, you were an absolutely amazing man who lived an incredibly fulfilling life with many interesting stories along the way. I am extremely proud to call you my Pop-pop. And we all knew, after all, you wouldn't go down without a fight.
With all the love a granddaughter could have,
Jacquelyn Victoria Conroy.

Dear Poppop,
Thanks for being an amazing grandfather. Thanks for always being the life of the party and the backbone of our family. Thanks for raising my dad and all my uncles and Aunt Patty to be such incredible people and incredible parents. Us grandkids will always remember you as the Irish heart and soul of the Conroy family. Listening to your Irish brogue was one of the best parts of going down the shore. Even when you could only lay in the living room, you were the life of the party.
We love you Poppop and miss you greatly.
Lots of Love,
Amy

"Little" sister, Anne (age 91) remembers the day well back in 1942! "Brudder" Bill decided to sign up for the Navy. His mother was heart broken. They lived on Lindley Avenue (North Philadelphia, PA) with their parents Patrick Joseph/Anna E. (nickname Nan) Jamison Conroy. Together the siblings hopped on the early morning "J" Bus and got off on Broad Steet at City Hall. Anne worked in the PSFS building (30th & 32nd Floors) located 12th & Market Streets City of Philadelphia, PA that is now a National Historic Landmark. The Navy sign up office was right in that area. They walked together from City Hall towards the PSFS building and then they parted with Anne going to work and Bill signing up to serve his country. The Navy took Bill right away and off to Boot Camp he went. At Boot Camp he became sick with pneumonia and went to Sick Bay. He recovered from the pneumonia and was stationed in CT.

Uncle Bill was bigger than life! He was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He always worked hard for his family and he was always proud of his family, too. His pride and joy was his "bride" of almost 52 years. Then came his pride and joy with 6 children followed by ALL of the grandchildren. Many enjoyable visits were had where he would put on the Irish brogue to entertain us all. It brought back memories of his dear father, Patrick Joseph Conroy (age 24) who came to America (Philadelphia, PA) arriving October 7, 1906 on the S.S. Noordland. He loved his mother Anna E. (Ellen) Jamison (age 21) who also came to America (Philadelphia, PA) arriving July 14, 1907 on the S.S. Westernland. Patrick and Anna (nickname Annie and later Nan) met in Philadelphia, PA. They were married by Rev. Jacobus J. Tynaw June 12, 1912 St. Stephen Church Philadelphia, PA despite Anna's birth certificate traveling on the S.S. Titanic that sunk in April 1912. The couple wanted children and their first was a miscarriage. Annie had surgery after the loss of their first child in hopes of having more children. Surgery back then was not common. On July 30, 1918 their daughter Anna Elizabeth was born and on February 17, 1930 their son William Patrick Conroy was born. William had reddish hair and lots of curls. He was a beautiful baby and almost had two mothers to take care of him as his sister was almost 12 years old when he was born. Her life blossomed after the baby was born and was thrilled to have a brother. Anne E. Conroy Parker Marto is now 91 years old and treasures every memory of her dear departed brother.

Mr. Conroy, I don't even know where to begin. You and Mrs. Conroy were extremely positive influences on my sister and me as we were growing up. You watched us graduate from grade school, learn how to drive, and go on to college. When we moved into Tranquility we couldn't have gained better neighbors and friends. I'll miss seeing you in the garage and hearing your warm welcomes when I pull into the driveway. We've lost a wonderful man who impacted my life. I thank you for all you have done for me and my family. I love you.

As a neighbor of Mr. Conroy for the past 15 years I must say I have never met a more outgoing warmhearted person with such a positive attitude on life. From getting locked out of my house, to trying to start the lawn mower, Mr. Conroy was always there to willing lend his helping hand and his daily greetings when I would walk home from school could always put a smile on my face. Mr. Conroy I will truly miss you. I send my condolences to Mrs. Conroy and the rest of the family. You’re in my prayers.

The world has lost a great man and I have lost a father and my best friend. I won't see him anymore, hug him, hear his laugh or his stories - but he will always be in my heart and my thoughts. When I hold my own kids I will remember how you held and comforted me. Pop, I will miss you - but you know you will be with me in spirit every day of my life.

He remembers you as a strong provider who worked two jobs to support his family, instilling discipline in his children to carry them successfully through life. My sincere condolences are expressed to Bill and the rest of your family as they grieve their loss.

I recall riding my Schwinn ALL the way over from Cherry Hill [wink] to Meadowbrook to bask in the lilt of this man. I reveled in his joie de vivre (how do you say that in Gaelic?) that reverberated from him and throughout his family, making days spent on Gladwyn a celebration of life.
Maybe he spoiled me because I was/am friends with his only daughter in that bivouac of boys that always seemed to be running in and out of the house? And, where will I go now to hear him call my name in an affectionate brogue as only he could do?
I will miss you, Mr. Conroy ("Call me, 'BIll!'"). It won't be hard for me to recognize a moment of silence in your honor because the world is definitely quieter without the laughter you shared with it.
