Edwin S. "Smitty" Smith, age 85, of Cape May Court House, NJ died on Friday at Virtua Hospital, Voorhees, NJ. Born in Phila., Pa., he formerly lived in the Northeast Section of Phila. before moving to the Cape May area in 1973. He was a graduate of Dobbins Vo-Tech School in Phila. He formerly worked for Swenson Ford of Phila. and retired from Smitty's Service Center in Del Haven in 2001. He enjoyed fishing and helped to rescue Captain Weber's party fishing boat "Onawa" during a severe storm by securing the boat to a buoy and repairing the motor. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Helen; two sons, Edward H. of Phila., Pa. and Kenneth R. of Washington Twp., NJ; a daughter, Linda McCutcheon of Collegeville, Pa; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother William of Brigantine, NJ and a sister Ethel Smith of Abington, Pa. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Richard and Charles and two sisters, Ida Battelle and Bernice Hawks. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, 12 noon at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd., N. Cape May, NJ, where friends may call after 11 AM. Burial will be in Cold Spring Cemetery.
