Obituary of Frederick J Hofstetter Sr

Please share a memory of Frederick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frederick J. Hofstetter, Sr., 87, North Cape May went to meet his Lord and Savior Sunday June 30th. Born March 18, 1937 in Philadelphia, he was the son of John M. and Ruth (Bluett) Hofstetter. He grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Lincoln High School. While at Lincoln he was very athletic and played on the baseball team. His athletic ability caught the eye of some minor league scouts, however Fred decided that he would join the Navy and serve his country. He served during Peacetime and was stationed on the destroyer escort USS Brough from 1955-1957. Fred was an extremely patriotic person and it was important to him that the American flag fly high at each of his homes. He would often play patriotic music first thing in the morning. He was not only proud of his country but also proud of his faith in God. He would read his Bible first thing each morning. Because of his strong faith, he was very active in many churches including the Seashore Community Church of the Nazarene, Covenant Bible Church, West Wildwood Bible Church and Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia. He volunteered his time at the food bank at the Nazarene Church, managed the Seaside Home in Cape May from 2000 to 2003 and served on missionary teams to Sri Lanka, Dominican Republic, and Belize. He also traveled to New Orleans and Mississippi after hurricane Katrina to help rebuild the communities. After retiring from Glaxo Smith Kline in 1990 he worked as a school bus driver until 1997. From 1997 until 2001 he worked with special needs children and eventually became a classroom aid. He along with his wife Susan, opened their hearts and home from 2006 to 2021 when they became host parents to almost 30 international workers and high school exchange students. Many of whom are still eternally grateful to the Hofstetter's. When Fred had some "down time" he would enjoy golf, crossword puzzles and back in his day was a member of a softball team. He was a gifted painter who had a gentle spirit and had a childlike simplicity with his paintings. His medium of choice was acrylic and watercolor. He enjoyed drawing cartoons, many of which Susan had saved. Fred was blessed to meet the love of his life Susan Carney. Susan became Mrs. Frederick Hofstetter June 19, 1976. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. The two were blessed with four children, two boys and two girls and eventually grandchildren and great grandchildren. They include daughter Robin Lorraine Hofstetter Morris (wife of Jerry), daughter Jill Grace Hofstetter Herman (wife of Tim), son Frederick J. Hofstetter, Jr. (husband of Lisa), and son Michael Hofstetter. Grandchildren Tim Sloan, Greg Herman (husband of McKenna), Julia Herman Sowinski (wife of Eric), John Hofstetter (fiancée of Clarissa O'Grady), Rebecca Hofstetter, and Robyn Hofstetter (fiancée of Aaron Mascobetto); and great granddaughters Haley and Chloe. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Theobald and his constant companion Cassandra, many nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 20th at 1:00pm at Covenant Bible Church 123 Fishing Creek Road, North Cape May. Family and friends are invited to join the reception and celebration of Fred's life at the Seashore Community Church of the Nazarene, 446 Seashore Road, Cape May, following the service.
