Leroy Bennett Tyrrell, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away on Tuesday morning, March 4, 2014. Lee was born on December 20, 1924, in Hollywood California. His parents were Harry and Florence Ellen Wise Tyrrell. His mother passed away unexpectedly, two months after his birth and he was raised by a close neighbor friend, Beatrice Simpson, and then later by his mother's sister Winifred Chant of Philadelphia. He married Regina(Jean) Catherine Wright on September 5, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pa., and the have remained devoted to each other for more than 68 years. Lee was a veteran of World War II. He loved America. After enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17, he participated in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal, in the South Pacific. When he returned to the states, he was reassigned to Philadelphia and then to Camp Lejeune, NC, where he served as a cartoonist for the Globe Marine Corps Publication. In recent years, he served as the Commander of the local VFW in Atlantic City. He was was also known in his community for serving others. Lee was well known by his family and friends as a great host and someone who always made people feel important. He has a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor. Letters written on his typewriter were always unique, clever and funny. He left a legacy of the joy of photography with his prosperity. He is survived by his wife Jean Tyrrell of Atlantic City, three children Jim (Rita) Tyrrell of Salt lake City, UT; Bob(Beth) Tyrrell of Salt Lake City, UT.: and Nanci(Gary) Maisano of Absecon, NJ: 14 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchilren. While we are heartbroken by his passing, we rejoice in his reunion with his mother , father, brother and sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, March 10, 2014 11am from Our Lady Star of the Sea Church 2651 Atlantic Ave. Atlantic City, 08401.Relatives and loved ones will be received at the church on monday morning from 9:30-11:00am.
