Obituary of David Shaw Gemmell

David S Gemmell, age 69, of Cold Spring passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at his home. Born in Baltimore, MD; he has been a Cape May area resident since 1980. He was a 1958 graduate of Towson High School in Towson, MD; and a 1962 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy; and received a Master of Science degree in Management from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. David attained the rank of Commander while serving 20 years in the Coast Guard; retiring in 1982. He was a Naval Aviator, helicopter pilot, Staff Officer in Washington DC at CG Headquarters, and Commanding Officer at the CG Air Station Cape May as well as Group Commander. David taught mathematics at Wildwood Catholic High School; owned & operated Midsummer Night's Dream Antiques in Cape May with his wife; was property manager at Regent Beach Condominiums in Cape May; and was self employed as consultant in bookkeeping and business management. He was a member of Cape Harmonaires for many years; past President of MAC; and past President of Cape May Stage. David is survived by his: wife Doreen "Wynki" Gemmell; daughter Bethany Maruzzi of Springfield, PA; stepson Eric Flickinger of Cape May; stepdaughter Kirsten Flickinger of Tampa, FL; brother Jeffrey Gemmell of Landisville, PA; sister Laurie Shettle of Baltimore, MD; and stepmother Patricia Gemmell of Towson, MD. There will be a funeral service at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 702 Seashore Rd, Erma, NJ; where friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Cold Spring Cemetery, 780 Seashore Rd, Cold Spring, NJ. The family suggests donations in David's memory to the ALS Assoc., 321 Norristown Rd, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
