Never realized how much I owe to Mort Hughes until I read Meghan Wren’s story.
Mort not only made it possible for me to have a unique and memorable experience on the restored AJ Meerwald as Shipboard Coordinator, he also contributed in one of the toughest war theaters to both my parents’ (Dutch children in WWII) liberation.
BDP donation in Mort’s name follows; to express deep appreciation and gratitude.
Condolences to Mort’s family & friends.

I am so very for the loss of a dear kind person as Mort . Mort made such an impact on me. His attitude and and quiet humor was un-matched.I met Mort In 1989 at the Project , and even then I was amazed at his strength and stanima- he was the origional "Energizer bunny " Made me ashamed of myself .I hope you will meet me up there,I will never forget you.
I know the family has a missing place in their lives as well as his extended family , but do his memories justice and emulate a magnificent person .

There are not enough words to
express to you
What you mean to me
Your love,support and guiding
hand
Made me as strong as I could
be
You never had to say "I love
you"
I could feel it in my heart
I think of you as my guiding
light
Showing me the way through
the dark
Throughout my life there were
many times
When I could've made the wrong
choice
But you were always in the
back of my mind
I could always hear your voice
And even when I chose the
wrong road
You were always there for me
You picked me up and dusted me
off
And showed me where I should
be
Although I know it was your
time to go
I can't help feeling selfish
I wanted you to live forever
But I know that's not very
realistic
Your passing has left a huge
hole in my heart
But that is now filled with
memories
I will never forget my life
with you
Every moment I will treasure
forever
I will never say good bye to
you
Instead I will say "see ya
later"
Cause you are my Daddy, the
true love of my life
Forever and ever and ever

I'm so sorry to hear of Mort's passing. It was such an honor to know Mort and his family and work with Mort on the restoration of the Meerwald to sail. I've been Meerwald volunteer since 1989. We'll miss you Mort.

Our Dad will be greatly missed. He could do just about anything he set his mind to; can't do was not in his vocabulary. He taught us to be self sufficient, responsible, caring, honest, and thoughtful of others. He grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930's, and taught us to save and not to waste anything, no matter how small. He was kind , patient, and a wonderful teacher to us. He was always there when we needed him. We feel very proud of him, and the example he set for us to follow in his footsteps was how he lived his life day in and day out. He has missed our Mom terribly since she passed in 2003. Now he is back with her and they will be together for eternity. We love you Dad and Mom and are glad that you are both together again.
