Bernard J. Bernie Martin, age 89 of Villas passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003. Born in Phila., Pa., he spent numerous years as a child in Ireland. He was a 1938 graduate of West Catholic High School. He had worked as a shipfitter at the Phila. Naval Yard before enlisting in the U. S. Navy, serving as a first class shipfitter during World War II. He was a retired lieutenant of the Phila. Police Force and retired after 25 years of service in 1976. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., member of the Villas Fishing Club, Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #5 in Phila. and D.A.V. of Del Haven.
Bernie enjoyed singing at various functions and was a shuffleboard champion. He was predeceased by his siblings Annamae Brennan, Elizabeth Madden, Phillip and Patrick, and 1st grandson (who was born on his grandfathers birthday) Cheyenne Kane. Bernie is survived by the love of his life of 60 years,his wife Rose; daughter Roseanna Kane, a son, Brian Martin, a daughter Mary Ellen (Tom) Lindsay, six grandchildren, Shawn Kane, Brian Martin, Jr., Thomas Bernard, Mark, Tara and Courtney Walsh, a sister, Mary Ruggiano,, sisters-in-law, Ellen Keenan and Bridget (Richard) Cuthrell and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, 10:30 AM at St. Raymonds Church, Bayshore & Ocean Ave., Villas, NJ, where friends may call after 9:30AM. Burial will be held on Friday, 11 AM at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem, Pa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Alzheimers Assoc., 3 Eves Drive, Suite 310, Marlton, NJ 08053.
