Mary Ellen Whitney, age 97, of North Cape May passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at Victoria Manor. She was born in Fishing Creek, NJ on November 17, 1916, the daughter of the late Frank and Hazel (Wescott) Sheets. Mary Ellen grew up in Fishing Creek attending the Fishing Creek Elementary School and graduating from Cape May High School in 1935. She loved living here and lived in Lower Township and Cape May her entire life. A devoted wife, loving mother and great friend, Mary Ellen touched many people in many ways, and will be truly missed and fondly remembered. Mary Ellen dedicated her life to serving her community and family. She served as First Committeewoman in the First District, Lower Township, for many years; was active in the Cape May County Women's Republican Club, serving as First Vice President. She served as a volunteer with the Erma Fire Department and volunteered for many charitable campaigns. Mary Ellen enjoyed being an election judge for school, primary and general elections until she was 90. She enjoyed seeing friends and relatives and reminiscing about the life and times of Lower Cape May County. She was the last surviving sibling of seven children: Margaret Hess, Charles Sheets, Thelma Sheets, Pearl Edmunds, Bette Forgnoni, and Joe Sheets. Her husband, Charles R Whitney, passed away in 1998. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judith and Thomas Vivian of Erma and New Hampton, NJ; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Barbara Whitney of Deer Isle, ME; grandson Thomas Vivian & his wife Grace; two great-grandchildren: Elias & Hannah Vivian; grandson Adam Whitney; and many nephew, nieces, cousins, and their families. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, North Cape May, NJ 08204; where friends will be received from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery, 780 Seashore Rd, Cold Spring, NJ. Donations may be made in Mary Ellen's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
