James P Harris Sr. AKA, "Big Jim", age 58, of North Cape May was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born in Mercy Hospital, Sea Isle City.. He was a life-long Cape May County Resident. He was a proud commercial fisherman his entire life. It made him happy to go out and catch fish knowing he was feeding people. Jim started his fishing career in Sea Isle City at the age of 13 with Lou Bufalo. He was hooked and fishing was in his blood. At the age of 18 he was lost at sea for 10 days, but even this could not deter his love and respect for the ocean. His desire to go on offshore boats brought him to Cape May in 1980, where he worked on numerous boats until Jim and Bertie purchased their own boat, the F/V Abracadabra, which he ran until retirement. Jim was a third degree knight of Columbus in the Stella Maris Council 3546 in Erma and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Cape May. Jim is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 33 years, Bertie, who he adored, his daughter Jennifer Joy (Alyson) of Claymont, DE; his grandson JP Harris III the sparkle of his eye of N. Cape May; his mother-in-law Joyce Lafferty of Sewell, NJ; Jim is predeceased by his son, James P. Harris Jr.; his parents, Edwin and Wilma Harris, his brothers, Edwin Harris, Vince Pecoraro, and his twin sisters, Kathryn Smith and Sara Jane Rapoza; his father-in-law Raymond Lafferty, and his beloved Beagle, Harry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 Noon on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at St John Neumann Parish , St Raymond's RC Church, Ocean & Bayshore Rd, Villas. Relatives and friends may call from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Road, N. Cape May. Burial will be in Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring.
