Obituary of John J Grone Jr
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John J. "Snake" Grone, Jr., 87, entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 23rd in Florida at his residence. He was born April 5, 1937 in Philadelphia, the oldest child of the late John D. and Rosemary (Zwolak) Grone.
Some would say that John was a simple man. His true passion was Sport Fishing. If the fishing was good, nobody's working. He always claimed that fishing was relaxing, however, he was known to not fish with one rod but three- getting his exercise running between each rod. His most memorable catch was a 68 lb. yellow fin tuna that he fought for a half hour.
John served 2 years in the United States Army. After he was honorably discharged, he went to work for Boeing Aircraft, Vertol Division. He gave them over 50 years of loyalty and dedication. It was the same dedication that he carried over into his work with fellow veterans. He could be described as a "veteran's veteran", selfless and giving.
John grew up with the love of his life, Sandy, living down the street when he was growing up in Philadelphia. It wasn't until the two re-met in 1962 after his service in the Army that a romance began. They would eventually become the proud parents of 4 children and many grandchildren as well as many great-grandchildren.
He was actively involved in many organizations both here in Cape May County as well as Philadelphia and Florida. Some of which were the DAV, the Villas Fishing Club, the VFW, Stella Maris Home Association and the Moose Lodge. He held several positions in the various clubs and organizations.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sandra Nadine Grone (2021) and several siblings. He will forever be missed by his children Dave Grone (Rose), John Grone III (Lisa), Donna Bitting (Mark) and Dennis Grone; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be announced in the near future.
