Joseph Michael Dougherty, Sr., (Joe), formerly of Philadelphia and Warrington, PA and most recently a resident of North Cape May, NJ, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Rebecca, his four sons: Joe, Jr. (Debra), Jim (Susan), Jack (Theresa) and Jeff (Cindy). He had eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and their children, and especially loved Eileen (Daily) Gallagher (Jay), Skip Daily, John Daily (Peg) and Kathy Daily, who grew up "one street over" in the Juniata Park section of Philadelphia. Born in Pittsburgh on July 26, 1926, Joe was the son of the late Samuel and Catherine (Doyle) Dougherty. He received his GED in 1974, after leaving West Catholic High School in Philadelphia in 1944 to proudly serve in the 106th Infantry Division as well as the 13th Tank Battalion of the US Army in Northern France and Belgium. He was well-decorated for his WWII service. Joe began his career with Philco in Philadelphia upon his return to the states. He finished his career with Philco/Ford in the mid-1970s, working in many different capacities including Tool & Dye technician and Model-Maker, and continued his career with Air Shields of Lansdale, Pa. He won many awards for his innovative design and techniques. Joe was a devout member of Holy Innocents Parish in Philadelphia, as well as St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Warrington, PA. Joe found joy in spending time on the beach in Wildwood and Cape May, and bought his first house "downashore" in the early 1980s. He was a voracious reader, an avid history buff and a passionate sports fan. He loved playing Bridge and Pinochle, and played Bridge competitively for many years. As a diehard fan of all Philly teams, he especially loved the Phillies and "Iggles," as well as the Philadelphia Athletics, his Mom's favorite team. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating countless memories at his shore houses and his annual Christmas and Easter extravaganzas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters, Anna, Margaret and Mary, his two brothers Samuel and James (Doc) Dougherty, as well as his eldest grandson Joseph, III. Joe will have a private service celebrated by his immediate family in North Cape May. Evoy Funeral Homes, Inc. 3218 Bayshore Road North Cape May, NJ 08204 has been entrusted with arrangements.
