Please share a memory of Eugene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Cathrall, Eugene H., IV, age 68, of West Cape May, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at his home. Born in Bryn Mawr, PA, Eugene “Gene” has been an area resident for 44 years. Gene was born on January 15, 1953. His father was an Army officer serving in Korea. It took 2 or 3 days for the Red Cross to reach him. When his father’s tour was up, he transferred to Yokohama, Japan. Gene and his mother were able to join him when Gene was 6 months old. Gene lived in Japan for over a year and a half. He also lived with his military family twice in the Stuttgart area of Germany for 3 ½ years each time, graduating from the Stuttgart American High School in 1971. Gene returned to the States, entered and graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, while working as a campus EMT and taking the winters instead of summers off and skiing with the National Ski Patrol on Blue Knob Mountain. He came to Cape May because his parents had just bought a “fixer-up” house there. He wanted to help them, with his brothers David and Stephen, with some of the restoration. He enjoyed the work so he stayed and started his own company, Eugene H. Cathrall Contracting Co., and then Spectrum Solar and finally Spectrum Builders. He also enjoyed sailing with the members of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May. Gene loved the outdoors – being a Boy Scout, (Life Scout), camping, skiing, sailing, fishing – and also classic rock – especially Pink Floyd. He is predeceased by his father Lt. Col. Eugene H. Cathrall, III, USA (RET) and his brothers David Cathrall and Stephen Cathrall. He is survived by his partner Katherine (Lissy) Fritz, his sons Riley and Patrick (Julia) Cathrall, Grandson Cooper Cathrall, mother Josephine (Jody) Cathrall, and sister Ann (Gerry) Leinenbach, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Eugene was held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Evoy Funeral Homes, 3218 Bayshore Rd., N. Cape May, NJ. Contributions in memory of Eugene can be made to the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May (CYCCM) Sailing Foundation which provides Jr. sailing scholarships to USCG and local youth.
