Obituary of Frederick W Hermes

Frederick W. Hermes, Jr., age 95, of Villas, formerly of Groton, CT, passed away on January 10th, 2018. Frederick was born in Mystic, CT. He was a graduate of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Academy in New London, CT, Class of 1945. In 2015, he celebrated his 70th class reunion. He is the son of the late Katherine Bronke and Frederick W. Hermes, Sr. He was Commanding Officer of two Coast Guard Cutters prior to his retirement as a USCG Commander (CDR) in 1964. After his retirement from the USCG he was a high school math teacher in Groton, CT and also coached freshman football. He was a private yacht captain in Stonington, CT, a member of the VFW in the Villas, the D.A.V. in Del Haven, Villas Fishing Club, American Humane Society, and the Sierra Club, and enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Margaret, who he married August 14th, 1986 at the USCG Academy, New London, CT, sons Frederick W. III (Linda) and Brian (Estelle), daughters (CDR) Glena Tredinnick, USCG (ret.) (John), Megan Hermes Rios, and Rebecca M. Hermes, 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Frederick was preceded in death by his sister Helen. Services for Frederick will be held on Wednesday, January 17th, 11:00 am at the USCG Training Center Cape May, One Munro Ave., Cape May, NJ 08204. Friends will be received at the Training Center 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Please allow 30 min. for security.
