Richard M "Doc" Dougherty, age 82, of Villas passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Doc, as he was affectionately known, attended Cape May High School. He also worked at local farms taking care of hydrangea beds and picking apples at harvest. In 1952 Doc served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He received an Honorable discharge in 1957 and earned the "National Defense Service Medal", the "Good Conduct Medal" and the "Air Force Outstanding Unit Award". Upon returning to Cape May County, Doc secured employment with United Airlines as an airplane mechanic. Upon early retirement in 1989, he began renovating houses, while also enjoying his love of collecting and selling antiques, most fondly so at Wilbraham Park, West Cape May. Gregarious and personable, Doc treasured interacting with the people he encountered an all venues, referring to all those he dealt with as wonderful. He regarded that time in his life as unique and special. Doc is preceded in death by his father, George Dougherty, of Cape May. He will be sadly missed by those he considered his family and many close friends: Chuck McPherson (Barbara), April McPherson Wilburn (David), Debbie McPherson, Dotti McPherson Emery (Michael), Michael McPherson, and Jerry Hall (Eileen). Also, grandchildren: Raymond Hober, Jr., Michael Hober (Jessica), Miranda Jarman Colucci (Anthony), Elizabeth Cresse Clark, Jacquelyn Hall Thomas (John), Amanda Hall, John Anderson, Crystal McPherson Painten, Carly McPherson and many great grandchildren. Doc was a man of quiet generosity who graciously gave materially and in deed to others without expectation. Doc 's charity of choice was Deborah Hospital, which he faithfully supported for many years. Donations may be made there in his memory.
