Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Shackleton, Carol Jean (O'Neil), 79, of Lower Township passed away March 7, 2017. Carol was born April 24, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio, to her late parents: Charles R. and Helen (Schwartz) O'Neil. She graduated from St. Mary of the Springs Academy in 1955, and married Frederick William Shackleton, Jr. in 1957. Carol was a devoted military wife. The family moved frequently – finally settling in Lower Township in 1970, when Fred was stationed at Training Center Cape May to decommission the last two lightships (Delaware and Five Fathom) for the U.S. Coast Guard. Carol worked in food service for the Lower Township schools for 26 years. She was the high school cafeteria manager for Lower Cape May Regional School District for 23 of those years, until her retirement in 1998. She also worked as a hostess in area restaurants – most notably, Uncle Bill's Pancake House in North Cape May. Her happy nature, bright smile (red lipstick), Irish scarf (her babushka), and her loyalty to her favorite football teams (Philadelphia Eagles, Ohio State, and Notre Dame) will be missed by everyone who knew her. Carol is survived by her daughters: Cherri (John) Olsen and Julie (Richard) Redden. Her grandchildren: John (Erin) Olsen, Jr.; Joy (Kaleb) Magnusson; Joshua (Kaitlyn) Olsen; Sarah (Michael Redden) Stewart; Jennah (William) Marmol. Her great-grandchildren: Marlee Reagan and Isabella Redden; Bjorn and Hazel Olsen; Espen and Eilif Magnusson. Carol is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Shackleton (1993), her great-grandson Eskil Magnusson (2014), and her daughter Tracy Shackleton just seven weeks ago. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 13, 2017 at the Parish of St John Neumann, St John of God RC Church, 680 Townbank Rd, North Cape May, NJ 08204; where friends will be received from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Cape May County Veteran's Cemetery, 127 Crest Haven Rd, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. At Carol's request, friends and family who wish to make a donation in her memory are asked to direct their contributions to: St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
