Francis J Whelan, 86, of Rio Grande passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at his home. Born in Philadelphia, PA and formerly of Pine Hill, NJ; he has been a Cape May area resident since 1976. Francis was the owner/operator of Whelan's Tavern in Pine Hill and was a supervisor/manager of the Grand Hotel in Cape May for 25 years. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II. Francis was a member of St John of God RC Church, the Wildwood American Legion, the Moose Club of Erma, and he loved going to the casinos in Atlantic City. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Dolores (Cochran) Whelan of Rio Grande, NJ; his son Michael (Judy) Jordan of Overguard, AZ; his daughter Joyce Johnson of Rio Grande, NJ; his daughter Elizabeth Johnson of N Wildwood, NJ; and son Frank Johnson of Augusta, GA. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Francis was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 1 sister. There will be a funeral service at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, N Cape May, NJ 08204; where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Cape May County Veteran's Cemetery, 127 Crest Haven Rd, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
