Obituary of John N Alexander
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John N (Pop) Alexander, 92, of Erma passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Pop was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 45 years Kathleen; his grandson Warren J Alexander Jr.; and his great grandson Warren Joseph Alexander III. As a young man, he was raised in Mayville. At age 21 he proudly enlisted in the US Army and was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked. From there he gallantly fought on enemy lines through the South Pacific and was the recipient of many medals for his courage and valor including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Pop was a life member of DAV Chapter 44 and Peterson Little VFW Post 386. He also enjoyed attending the annual 25th Infantry Division reunions with the few remaining WWII vets. Pop was always a go getter and had many jobs after returning from the war to include working as a local commercial fisherman, working for the American Dredge Co., and driving dump trucks and tractor trailers. He loved truck driving most of all and hauled everything from the big rocks that were used to build the jetties in Cape May and N Cape May, to hauling pilings, stones, and dirt. Retiring from truck driving at age 60, he joined the family business at Atlantic Shellfish where he was actively employed until age 90. When not with his family or working, Pop's favorite pastime was watching NASCAR races and his favorite driver Carl Edwards #99. He also enjoyed watching Phillies games, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. Besides Hershey Kisses, Pop loved his family more than anything else on Earth. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His morals and values were of the highest standards, and his words of advice left to his family were to always be honest, never take anything for free unless you cam do something in return, never tell tales on people, and to never cozy up to people to gain favor. You would always know how he felt about someone when you'd hear him say they were a "good egg". Pop will be greatly missed by his sons: Jack of Rio Grande, Warren (Andrea) of MA, Stephen (Dolores) of Erma, Wayne of Erma, Mark (Donna) of Villas, and his beloved daughter-in-law Merna Alexander of Erma; his grandchildren: Karen (Martin) Smith, Stacy Alexander, Scarlet Alexander, Pam (Bud) Laub, Kathleen Alexander, Stephen Alexander Jr., Jaimie Alexander, Emily Alexander, Wayne (Brynn) Alexander Jr., Jonathan Alexander, Jacquiline Alexander, Daniel Alexander, Barbara Ann (Alon) Rolls, Markie Alexander, Anthony Alexander, Liz Alexander, & Nicholas Alexander, and his 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his loving sister Betti Slocumb of Kennewick, WA; his friend of the heart Elaine Bartleson, Eldon Poole, and Dr. Tom Foster whose friendships he held very dear. There will be a funeral service at 12 noon on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, North Cape May, NJ 08204: where friends may call from 10:30 to 12 noon. Interment will follow the service at St Mary's Cemetery, 1056 Seashore Rd, Cold Spring, NJ 08204. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in John's memory to the 25th Infantry Division memorial Fund, PO Box 606, Flourtown, PA 19031-0606 or the DAV, 1010 Bayshore Rd, Del Haven, NJ 08251, or the Peterson Little VFW Post 386, 419 Congress St, Cape May, NJ 08204.
