Herbert F Slook, 94, of North Cape May died Sunday, Nov 27, 2011 at Victoria Commons. Born in Philadelphia, he raised his family in Darby, PA before moving to South Jersey in 1978. Mr. Slook was a steamfitter retiring after 40 years service with Local Union 420 of Philadelphia. He was a member of the Stella Maris Knights of Columbus Council of Erma and the Moose lodge of Erma. Herb served with the 4th Armored Division in Europe. He landed at Utah Beach a month after the D-Day Invasion. Within weeks the division was sweeping across France. During the Battle of the Bulge, the unit provided badly needed support to the encircled US forces in Bastogne, Belgium. In early April, the division overran Ohrdruf, a sub-camp of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp; the first such camp liberated by US troops. Herb's division reached the Czech border by the end of the war. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor McGuckin Slook in 1980. Surviving are his children: George F Slook (Nancy) of Southampton, PA; Nancy J Slook (Joel Smith) of Juneau, AK; Jeanne M Slook of Douglas, AK; 4 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Parish of St John Neumann, St Raymond's RC Church, Ocean & Bayshore Rd, Villas, NJ 08251; where friends may call after 11:30 AM.
