Kathryn Cain Bennett (Casey), age 97, of Cape May passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2011 at Court House Convalescent Center in Cape May Court House. Born on July 18, 1913 in Darby, PA; she grew up in Drexel Hill, PA. She graduated from Upper Darby High School, Beaver College (now Arcadia), and received her Masters from the University of Pennsylvania.
Kathryn spent her summers in Cape May, which is where she met her future husband, Bob Bennett, who was a lifeguard and Cape May native. They married in 1935 at the Princeton University Chapel, and had their 3 children while living in Drexel Hill, PA. They moved to Swarthmore, PA in 1953 where they lived until retirement. Kathryn was a teacher at Upper Darby Jr. High School. They moved full time to Cape May in 1972, where Kathryn started a travel agency. One of her passions in life was traveling as much as she could to as many places as possible.
While living in Cape May, Kathryn was active in many different organizations. She was a member of the Cape May Garden Club as well as the Stone Harbor Garden Club. She was an active member of the Corinthian Yacht Club (formerly Harbor Sailing Club) where she became Club Historian. She was also active in the Episcopal Church, MAC (where she coordinated the "Elegant Dinners"), and several other organizations. She was an avid gardener, an excellant bridge player, a gourmet cook, and a fantastic hostess.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Capt. Robert S Bennett, Sr. in 2009; her son Robert S Bennett, Jr.; and her brother George Elmer Cain.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn (Kate) Bennett Walder of Gaithersburg, MD; Elizabeth (Betsey) Bennett Sands of Auburn, AL; and her daughter-in-law Judith Cross Bennett of Westtown, PA. Other survivors include her grandchildren: Wendy Bennett Sands of Midland, GA; Rachel Walder Orr of Greenwich, NJ; Rebecca Stockton Walder of Gaithersburg, MD; Kristin Palmer Sands of Auburn, AL; and Holly Bennett of West Chester, PA. Other survivors are her eight (8) great grandchildren and her niece Kathleen Cain Dillon of West Chester, PA.
