John Bortney, (Captain Jack), age 93, of North Cape May passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the North Cape Center. Born in Selje, Norway and formerly of New York City and Atlantic City; he has been a Cape May area resident since 1953. John served his country in the Merchant Marines and the Coast Guard during World War II. He received the Presidential Testimonial Letter, Victory Medal, Honorable Service Button, and Merchant Marine Emblem. John was a member of the carpenter's union in New York City; helped build the Woolworth Building; and played professional ice hockey in Atlantic City. He was a commercial fishing boat captain (known as "Captain Jack") on several fishing boats (Western Star & owner of The Donna B) in the Cape May area. A caring father & husband that lived his life to love and support his family; John is survived by: his wife of 54 years Dorothy (nee Reeves) of North Cape May; his son John (Kathy) Bortney of GA; his daughter Sharon (Jerry) Jorgenson of Cape May Court House; and daughter Donna Boyle of North Cape May. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren: Eric & Cierra Bortney, Nick Nardicchio, and Kevin Jr (Kayla), Kyle Boyle, Josh Ellis, & Krystal Jeffrey; one great grandson Kevin Boyle III; a sister Connie Reily of Cape May; and a niece Sonja (Mack) Amaker. There will be a memorial service at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, North Cape May, NJ 08204; where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
