James W Coover, 90, of Erma passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at his home. Born in Camden, NJ and formerly of Beverly & Riverside, NJ; he has been a Cape May area resident for 60 years. He retired after 35 years of service from Harbison-Walker Refractories, and was also a self employed Master Plumber for many years. James was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Superintendent of the Town Bank Chapel, and was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. Some of his achievements with the Boy Scouts included: the Baysea District of Southern NJ Council BSA "Lifetime Scouter Award"; 2/6/02 - Scoutmaster Troop 86, Committee Chair Troop 87, Unit Commissioner for Troop & Pack 87; 8/4/01 - BSA "James E West Fellow Award" gift made by Troop 87; 4/2/00 - Troop 104 Plaque of Appreciation; 9/19/67 to 8/19/87 - Scoutmaster Troop 87; and 1971 - "Outstanding Service to BSA Award". James was also very active in 4-H where he received many awards including: 1/10/91 - 30 Year Service Award, "Pitchfork & Buckets 4-H Livestock Club"; 3/16/79 - "Outstanding Leadership Award" presented by Cape May County Extension Advisory Council; Outstanding Sportsman in Livestock area; "Meritorious Service Award" for 40 years in 4-H; 7/17/03 - the Coover Pavilion was dedicated; and 11/18/01 he received the "Community Image Award" on behalf of Coast of Judea, Inc. James is survived by his wife of 62 years Janet Coover of Erma; son James (Teresa) Coover of Erma; and daughter Linda (Frank) Hidy of Appomattox, VA. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Jennifer Bobb, Lee Ann Dickson, Michael Coover, Douglas Coover, Michelle Scherberger, Michael Crabtree, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Lester and sister Jean. There will be a funeral service at 2:30 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 702 Seashore Rd, Erma, NJ; where friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 PM. Friends may also call at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, N Cape May from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday evening September 17, 2010. Interment will be private. The family suggests donations in James memory to the Tabernacle UM Church building fund.
