Walter R Statkiewicz, age 89, of North Cape May passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Cape Regional Medical Center. He served his country in the Marine Corps during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Walter served with the highly decorated Marine Fighter Squadron 223 in the Solomon Islands, Philippines, and Okinawa. He was an Honorary member of the Blue Angels Flight Team. Walter was awarded numerous medals including: Asiatic Pacific Ribbon w/3 stars, Philippine Liberation w/1 star. WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre, Marine Good Conduct, Army Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation w/1 star, NJ Meritorious Service Medal, Greatest Generation Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Victory medal, Asiatic/Pacific Victory & campaign Medals, and Rifle Sharpshooter Medal. The Certificate of Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Walter by US Marine Corps Commandant Carl Munday, Jr. After his time in the service, Walter was employed at the Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia as a Senior Analyst of Naval Jet Fighter Aircraft Engines. He was a member of the Villas Fishing Club, Senior Citizens of North Cape May, Wildwood CC, Lu Lu Temple CC, Master Mason, Lu Lu Temple Shriner, NAEFE, the Mason's Mitchel Lodge 286 of Jenkintown, PA, and the Marine Corps League. Walter loved sports, Classical & Popular Music, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and Phillies fan. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Walter is survived by his wife Florence of North Cape May, his son Walter R of Lewes, DE, and his daughter Sharon Steward of Bensalem, PA. Friends and relatives will be received from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 10, 2014 at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, North Cape May, NJ 08204. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Parish of St John Neumann, St Raymond's RC Church, Ocean & Bayshore Rd, Villas, NJ 08251; where friends will be received from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
