Obituary of Rita Marie Moore

Please share a memory of Rita to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rita Marie (nee Potts) Moore, age 83, passed away on Thursday June 18 after a four-month battle with post-surgery complications. She was born June 13, 1932 on Sergeant Street in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. She graduated in 1945 from Visitation B.V.M. Catholic grade school at B & Leigh Avenues. She met the love of her life, Leroy (Roy) Moore, a Korean War veteran, married on November 29, 1952 and lived happily for the next 62 years. They lived together on the 3500 block of Ella Street in St Hugh Parish the first forty years where they raised five children and forged long-lasting friendships with the neighbors. In addition to being an exemplary homemaker, managing hectic households on Ella Street and at the shore in the summer in the Villas, Rita worked part-time at Robert Bruce and King Caterers and was a school bus monitor at Cramp School. In 1992, Rita and Roy retired to the Villas. For the last 22 years, she continued to be a dedicated wife, great mom and a loving Gram to her nine grandchildren and loving GG to her four great grandchildren. For more than 50 summers, she was a regular at the Broadway Beach in Cape May first with her children, sister and nieces, then with her grandchildren and most recently with her great grandchildren. In her retirement years, Rita visited Fort Lauderdale regularly in March, she went on many family and friends Princess Cruises in the Caribbean and traveled with her sister Margie to Las Vegas a few times to keep the casinos in business. She cruised the Hawaii islands with her daughter and took a two week Ireland land tour with her fun cousins Maureen, Peggy and all. Rita was a member of St. Raymond's Church in Villas, NJ. She was the avid hockey fan who would stay awake to the early morning hours just to watch the Flyers away games on the west coast. She attended live Flyers games with her niece Margie who arranged for photo opportunities for Rita with former flyers like Bob Kelly, Gary Dornhoffer and Bernie Parent. Rita shared her famous hanging kitchen towels with all the Flyers players and her family and friends too. She made an amazing cheesecake which will be sorely missed by the Knight of Columbus members in Erma. Her cross-stitch baby quilts will be family heirlooms for her grandchildren for decades to come. Our summer cards games in the porch, bingo night and the annual family and friends Christmas cookie baking extravaganza will never be the same. The family sends a special thank you to the Administration and staff at North Cape Nursing home on Town Bank Road; their excellent care and compassion helped ensure Rita's last four months were peaceful. Rita is the beloved wife of Leroy (Roy) J. and sister of Bobby, Billy(d), Tommy (d), Jimmy (d), Isabell (d), and Margie (d). Devoted mother of the late Roy Thomas (d), survived by Rita Sprenkle (George), John Moore (Donna), Margaret Moore, and Jacqueline Mathis (Jack). Also survived by nine grandchildren: Denise Gianfrancesco Meissner, Christine Schwartz Shaeffer, Angela Moore Boggs, John Mathis, Margaret Schwartz Lepone, Roy Mathis, John Moore Jr., Jaclyn Moore and James Mathis, and survived by four great-grandchildren: Jason and Arianna Boyer, Leah and Sarah Shaeffer. Family and friends are invited to call at St Raymond's Church Villas, NJ on Monday, June 22 from 9-10 am. Funeral Mass to follow at 10am. Interment at 2 pm at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 3301 Cheltenham Ave Phila, PA. Immediately after the burial, the family will return to the Villas.
