Mercedes Andersen Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Mercedes Andersen announces her peaceful passing at home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.

Mercedes' life was defined by a beautiful love story that began in Germany in 1964. It was there she met Ib Fleming Wurts Andersen while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They were married on November 17, 1964, beginning a journey of more than 50 years together. Mercedes was a dedicated Coast Guard wife and a loving mother who anchored her family through every deployment. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ib, on March 7, 2015.

While raising her three children, Mercedes shared her incredible talents as a seamstress, creatively supplementing the family income by crafting custom wedding dresses. Her spirit of giving was legendary; an invitation to her dinner table meant you were officially part of the family. Mercedes found unique ways to serve her Coast Guard community. While managing the base snack bar for recruits, she insisted they use their first names when ordering-a small but profound gesture of humanity in a world of surnames and protocol. She wanted them to feel the warmth of home, and her efforts earned her countless letters of gratitude from recruits and their parents alike. A pillar of her community, Mercedes was determined to maintain her independence, a goal supported by the deep roots she and Ib planted in Cape May. Whether supporting the Lower Township Rescue Squad or ensuring the local Senior Center was stocked with art supplies for every holiday, her generosity never wavered.

Mercedes is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
