On December 8th, Theodore C. Phelps, Jr. age 82, passed away after a brief illness. Ted was born on July 13th, 1943, to Helen and Theodore Phelps, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his brother William Vinten Phelps, and many close friends including Lloyd and Marie Hayes.
Ted graduated from Bartram High School in June of 1961; while attending Bartram he was awarded the title “All City Short Stop” and was part of two city championship baseball teams. He then served in the Army National Guard, eventually serving in the reserves of the United States Air Force. Upon completion, receiving an Honorable Discharge.
Ted spent his summers from a young age with his family vacationing at the Jersey shore. His summers on the beaches in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest lead him to becoming a lifeguard, which he did for 16 years.
Ted was a person who achieved great things in his life. After his time in the service, he attended Penn State University, majoring in accounting. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he was drawn to mentoring young people and became a teacher returning to his “alma mater” Bartram High School where he taught accounting and computers for 37 years. Ted was a compassionate teacher and worked hard to instill in his students a love for learning. In addition, he received a master’s degree and two principal certifications.
Not a person to be inactive, he also worked to achieve his pilot’s license. He enjoyed flying with his brother Bill. In 2005, he and his brother moved to the family home located in the Wildwoods, where he enjoyed working out and long walks on the boardwalk during his retirement years. Many will remember him driving around town in his precious 1969 Riviera. He kept his car in pristine condition, and it was a real source of pride.
Ted will be remembered for his energy, his devotion to his family, his love of adventure, and the generosity with which he shared his time and talents and always a good story.
