Richard William Barnes (Dick, Dad, Uncle, Pop-Pop, & Great Pop-Pop), age 89, of North Cape May (Town Bank), NJ passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025. He was born on November 5, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA as the fifth child and only son of the late Raymond and Mary (nee Smith) Barnes.
Dick was the beloved husband for 72 years of the late Nancy Jane (nee Houck) Barnes; loving father of Richard W. Barnes, Jr. (Beth), Gary J. Barnes (Effie), Susan A. Shields (Rich) and his late son, Michael V. Barnes (Sharon); proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren; Stephanie Bradford (Ed), Nicole Bailey (Dave), April Barnes (Brian), Kelly Laskowski (Nick), Jennifer Adams (Jeremy), Kristen Shields (Shawn), Jason Barnes (Katrina), Keri Shields (Brian), Brittany Barnes (Lil), Kimberly Barnes (Mike), Richie Shields (Amanda), and an even prouder great-grandfather of 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Margaret Taney, Betty Rucker, Madeline Green, Joan Neff and his son Michael V. Barnes.
He attended St. Cyril’s School in East Lansdowne, PA and West Catholic High School where he met the love of his life, Nancy Houck and was married on January 23, 1953. After moving to Folcroft, PA and starting a family, he was encouraged to go to college and pursue a degree. While raising 4 children and working multiple full or part-time jobs, he attended night school at Penn Morton College (PMC now Widener University). He worked as the dairy manager at A&P, was the local night milkman for Sealtest Dairies, worked in the Sealtest Ice Cream division, and delivered beer for Riley’s Beer Distributor. Even while he juggled several jobs and night classes, he was always there for his family and passed along his admirable work ethic and the importance of family values to many lives.
Dick received his Degree in Electrical Engineering from PMC and demonstrated to his entire family how important it is to set a goal, make a plan, and finish the task. He went on to several National Design Engineering, Chief Engineering, and Regional Sales Manager positions with Westinghouse, General Electric, Onan, & Redco.
He was also a Eucharistic minister at St. Gabriel’s Church in Norwood, PA; served as Treasurer for the Folcroft Swim Club, President of the Engineering Union at General Electric, coached in the Folcroft Boys Club, and was a 3rd Degree Life Member and 4th Degree Assembly in the Knights of Columbus. Dick and his wife Nancy taught Pre-Cana classes to engaged couples in the Philadelphia Archdiocese and were involved with Marriage Encounter through St. Gabriel’s.
After many years of accomplishments in Folcroft, they moved to Cape May, NJ and enjoyed the beaches, swimming, and Delaware Bay sunsets together and were thrilled when their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren visited.
