James Michael Kirkwood, 78, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the cherished son of the late John and Susan (née Boyce) Kirkwood and the devoted husband of 53 years to the late Elsie Kirkwood.
James proudly served his country as a battlefield medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, along with many other medals for his bravery and dedication. Following his military service, he continued a life of care and compassion as both an ER and OR nurse at the former Northeastern Hospital in Philadelphia, and later with the Veterans Administration, where he dedicated himself to helping fellow veterans secure the benefits they deserved. James was also a man who would help when needed from saving a life to delivering a baby in a van under a street light.
A lifelong Phillies and Eagles fan, James also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins later in life known for how much he loved Amazon. He loved sitting on the porch and watching his grandkids. He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, achieving 4th Degree status, VFW, DAV and The American Legion. Above all, he treasured time with his grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with love, stories, and laughter. He was Pop to many….
In addition to his wife and parents, James was preceded in death by his grandsons, Ryno Kirkwood and Jimmy Witalec; his brother, Joseph Kirkwood; and his sister, Grace Kirkwood.
He is survived by his children, Shaun Kirkwood (Christy), Tinker Witalec (Chris), and Coleen Leszczynski (Jay); grandchildren, Paddy, Caden, Heather (Nick), Cecilia (Tom), Christopher (Cassie), Mackenzie, Madison, Samantha, Chelsea, Cody, Belle, Ava, and Katie; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Ethan, Bailey, Emily, Luke, Michael, Mason, David, Max and Emma; his sisters, Anne Welsh, MaryEllen Kirkwood; and his brother, Michael Kirkwood.
In lieu of flowers James and his family would request that you donate to a foundation nearest to their hearts.... the Paula & Ryne Kirkwood foundation that provides annual scholarships for future speech pathologists in Paula Kirkwood's name as well as various youth sports teams in Ryne (Ryno) name.
