Audrey Walters of Philadelphia and Cape May passed away peacefully on August 15th, 2025.
A lifelong Philadelphian, Audrey was educated and showed early artistic talent at Germantown High School before continuing her studies at the University of the Arts, where she was assigned a locker next to classmate Henry Walters. When Henry was hired by Wanamaker’s to oversee seasonal window displays, he proposed that Audrey be hired to design holiday posters. Their working relationship led to another type of proposal, and they later wed at the Ethical Society on Rittenhouse Square.
Audrey began her career overseeing the illustrations department of Curtis Publishing, being integrally involved in their magazine division, spending many years art directing “Jack and Jill” a major national magazine. Gaining a reputation as an in-demand graphic artist and illustrator, Audrey continued her work for Curtis while in tandem serving a wide range of advertising clients after establishing the leading freelance graphic design and illustration agency in Center City.
During their long marriage Audrey and Henry purchased, renovated and sold innumerable houses in Philadelphia, overseeing the redesign and decoration of each while living onsite. They eventually settled into their large home on Spruce Street. For many years thereafter Audrey applied her artistic talents to interior decoration for clients and friends.
In 1962 Audrey and Henry purchased a home in Cape May, New Jersey which remained their beloved summer home until Henry’s death in 2002, and for Audrey throughout her life.
As an active participant in the social life of Philadelphia and Cape May, Audrey was a longtime member and supporter of many organizations, among them the Charlotte Cushman Foundation, the Cosmopolitan Club, the Philadelphia Art Alliance and, in Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club, the Cottagers' Association and the Beach Club where she served a term as President.
Audrey was noted for her wit and style, and she relished conversations with fellow members, who became cherished friends over a game of Scrabble, at a porch party or simply while enjoying the Cape May sunshine by the pool, where she was happily situated as recently as the week before her passing.
Gently crossing the bridge after another wonderful Cape May summer brought an elegant ending to a life very well lived and thoroughly enjoyed.
