Loving Husband, Father (Papá), Grandfather (Avô, Paivô, Poppop), and Friend just days shy of his 85th birthday, Fernando Carlos Roque Sr. passed away on July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and legendary stories.
Born in Portugal, Fernando came to Cape May in 1975 with his wife Rosa and their sons to continue his life by the sea. A former codfisherman with a quiet strength and an unshakable faith, Fernando was known for his work ethic, his humility, and the pride he took in providing for his family.
He loved long walks - especially to the airport, loved to sit by the beach, and was a fixture in the community. If you ever thanked him for anything, you already know what he’d say: “Next time, give me more.”
Fernando never needed the spotlight; his life spoke for itself. He was a master storyteller, a faithful church usher, and a true artist in the kitchen. His Portuguese sausage and bread were unmatched, and he made sure every meal was an act of love. He often reminded those around him that life is short, and he meant it. He found joy in the simple things, and he taught the rest of us to do the same. But above all, he was a family man. In 62 years of marriage to his beloved Rosa, he built a life full of laughter, resilience, and deep devotion. His sons lovingly called him Papá, and his
grandchildren affectionately knew him as Avô, Poppop, or Paivô - titles he wore with deep pride and joy.
Fernando is survived by his wife Rosa and their three sons and families:
● Fernando Jr. and Colleen, and grandchildren Tanya, Nicole, Kayla, Brittney, and Trisha
● Nelson and Dawn, and grandchildren Elizabeth Rosa and Emily Madison
● Steven and Berdine, and grandchildren Ikeah, Isaiah, and Cirina
He is also survived by his treasured great-grandchildren.
Fernando’s presence was steady, his love was fierce, and his legacy is forever. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and honored always.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Wednesday, July 23rd from 10-11AM at Parish of St. John Neumann, St. Raymond's Church 800 Bayshore Road, Villas, NJ 08251.
