Obituary of Rebecca C. McCaughey

Please share a memory of Rebecca to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rebecca Margaret Carson McCaughey, passed away on April 30, 2025. She was born on February 4, 1944 in Abington, PA. Rebecca is survived by her husband James, her son James Jr., daughter Amanda (Joe), and grandson Joseph; sister Molly (John), brother Ed (Kris), sister Carol (Bill) and their families. Rebecca is preceded in death by her parents, William F. Carson, Jr and Bette Haag Carson; her sister Barbara, brother William III, and her sisters from other misters: Barbara Ann Miller, Maryann Smith, and Gene Fanelli. Growing up, Rebecca was creative, loved her family and friends and was involved in many activities, including field hockey, theater, and twirling batons – fire and all! She was an excellent seamstress as well, sewing costumes for her youngest sister Carol for their school plays. Rebecca attended Susquehanna University and received a degree in Classical Languages and English in 1966. Upon graduation, she became a Latin teacher at Germantown Academy. There she met her future husband, James, who happened to be a French teacher just down the hall from her classroom. While raising children, her creativity continued, as she sewed costumes for her children and for the kids at school. One of her most popular projects was her hand-sewn Cabbage Patch dolls. She also became a Band Parent while her children were in band. They needed a Color Guard coach as well, so she signed up to help the squad, incorporating her baton skills and then some. When James retired, they moved to Cape May. Rebecca wanted to have an adventure, so she took on the role of Mrs. Cape May County, and entered the Mrs. New Jersey pageant! She wore a vintage Victorian gown and hat to match Cape May's spirit. She had a fun time experiencing the pageant world. She began working in retail after that and was hooked. She loved setting the displays, another outlet for her creativity. Her favorite job was working for her dear friend in Diamond Beach. "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life." She found a lot of joy and meaning there. Rebecca spent her life helping others, wanting others to be happy and feel loved. We will miss her. Those who knew her, are grateful to have been part of her world.
