Obituary of Edward John Broderick

Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward John Broderick, 79 years old, of Cape May passed away on April 20th, 2025 in Cape May Courthouse. Edward was born in Jersey City, NJ to Edward and Amelia Broderick on April 6th, 1946. He was raised in Bayonne and later moved to Union where he graduated High School in 1964. He attended Rider College and graduated with a double major in Business and Philosophy. He met Mary Joan McNamara, the love of his life, at a party in their freshman year of college. He invited her on a walk and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in August. Edward was a voracious reader and interested in ancient mythologies. While on a date with Mary Joan he talked about the Egyptian Sun God Ra, and was impressed with her knowledge of the subject, which unbeknownst to him she had learned about in history class earlier that day. He began working for the family business in Manhattan - Alberta Smyth Personnel Agency, established in 1906 - when he was 16 years old, interviewing candidates and making job placements. He became President and ran the company until his retirement in 2013, earning numerous awards and respect as a leader, organizer and mediator in the Credit and Finance industries. Edward found his life-long passion for fishing as a child while on camping trips with his father Edward "Pop" Broderick to Maine and the family homestead on the Delaware River near Dingman's Ferry. Fly fishing for largemouth bass and bluefish with flies tied by his sons were his favorite fishing pursuits. He found a way to combine business with pleasure when he started several charter boat businesses out of Raritan Bay, including Fins on Feathers from Leonardo NJ. He lived with his family in Westfield, NJ from 1986 to 2013, where he hosted a large annual Christmas gathering for family and friends which included an outdoor pig roast. Upon retirement he followed the birds and fish to Cape May where he loved to drive his Mini Cooper to the Cape May Hawkwatch to photograph the migrating raptors and maintained multiple large flower gardens admired by and shared with the neighborhood. He had a tool and gadget for everything, and delighted in upgrading to the newer and better ones at every chance. Edward is survived by his wife Mary Joan Broderick, son Derek Broderick, sister Patricia MacDonnell, daughter-in-law Kelly Broderick, granddaughter Makena Broderick, nieces Sarah MacDonnell and Erin Broderick and nephews Frank Quinn, Terry Quinn, Kyle MacDonnell and Daniel MacDonnell. He is predeceased by his brother Brian Broderick, Sister Maureen Quinn, and his son Edward John Broderick. Funeral services will be held at Evoy Funeral Home 3218 Bayshore Road North Cape May on Thursday April 24th at 2:00pm. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 2PM until the time of service at 3PM. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
