Obituary of Robert Emmett Mahon

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Emmett, "Bob" Mahon of North Cape May passed away peacefully Sunday Morning, April 13, 2025. He was 91 years old. Bob was born on October 19th, 1933, on Belgrade St. in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. It was the height of the Great Depression, and he would often tell stories including how the block was called "One Egg Row", since folks on the street could only afford to buy one egg at a time and would use it to make bread or meatloaf. He was a proud graduate of North Catholic High School, class of 1952, and shortly thereafter began his career with the Penn Central Railroad before getting drafted into the Army in 1956. After his service ended, he returned to Penn Central to work in the accounting department. He met and married Mary Mahon shortly after. Together, they raised 6 children in the Harrowgate section of Philadelphia. One of his proudest achievements was using the GI bill to attend night school at Temple University. He received his B.A. in accounting in 1970. He also became a coach for various youth organizations, spending many years with Jasper A.C., United Sports Association and the Kensington Ramblers, coaching soccer and baseball. After Bob's first marriage ended, he met Barbara Kresz whom he would go onto marry in 1990. Bob and Barbara eventually retired and moved to North Cape May in 1992. He began a second career as a paper hanger and painter and over the course of the next 20 years, many houses in Cape May, Wildwood and the Villas were the beneficiaries of Bob's meticulous work. Bob and Barbara entertained their blended families and welcomed many grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. Their home was often filled with laughter and love especially around this Easter season. Bob was meant to be an actor as his infectious smile could light up a room. He appeared in shows at the Villas Fishing Club and with the Cape May Players singing and dancing along with his friends. He was also a proud long-time member of the Greater Cape May Elks, Chapter 2839, and worked on many charitable endeavors with his fellow Elks and his beloved wife Barbara. Barbara pre-deceased Bob, passing away on this St. Patrick's day leaving Bob heart-broken. They are now reunited and no doubt sitting on matching recliners watching The Quiet Man or The Ten Commandments drinking their coffee with their powdered creamer. In addition to Barbara, Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Francis, Bernard, Claire and Jane. He is survived by his children, Stephanie Goldberg, (Cary), Patricia Mahon, Robert Mahon Jr, Richard Mahon, (Kimberly), Mary Theresa Barr, (Robert) and Stephen Mahon, (Barbara); stepchildren, William Kresz, (Lisa), Thomas Kresz, (Diane) and Sharon Kresz, (Joseph); grandchildren, Richard, Brian, Amanda, Daniel, Jana Marie, Alexandria, Jacob, Elizabeth, Eric, Thomas, Anthony, Samantha, Amanda, Kaitlyn and Matthew; great grandchildren, TJ, Nico, Tanner, Leo, Micheal and Zoe and several nieces and nephews.
