Melvin James "Poppy" Cornwell, age 76, of Cold Spring passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in the comfort of his own home. Melvin was born August 5, 1940 in Rio Grande, NJ and has been a life-long area resident. He is the son of the late Clement and the late Emily (Ireland) Cornwell. Melvin retired after 18 years of service to the Stone Harbor Public Works Department. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, and riding his motorcycle with his granddaughter. After retirement he took up his favorite pastime – scrapping. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Patricia A Cornwell in 2008, his son Joseph Cornwell in 1961, and his son Paul Cornwell in 2013. He is survived by his daughter Donna (Mark) Alexander of Villas, and his sister Lillian (Ron) Wiedler. Also surviving are: his 3 grandchildren: Markie P Alexander, Barbara Anne Alexander, & Angela (Scott) Maurer; his 6 great grandchildren; and other special people in his life: Deborah Hawkins, Donna Jordan-Camp, & Linda Kincaid; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
