Walter A. Mara, 100, formerly of North Cape May, NJ peacefully departed on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Krakow, Poland on Sept. 10, 1914 to Anthony and Elizabeth Czerwinski, he attended military school in Poland and at the outbreak of World War II, he and his brother were called to service. Walter proudly served as captain in the Polish Army during the war and later with the Allied Resistance Forces in Europe assisting many to freedom. After the war he immigrated to the United States with the love of his life Lydia and two children, George and Donna. Eventually he and his family settled in South River, NJ where he was employed by Ford Motor Company in Edison as an electrician for over 35 years. Upon retirement he and his wife Lydia moved to Upstate New York and eventually settled in North Cape May to be close to their grandchildren. Walter was a 4th Degree member of the Wildwood Knights of Columbus, active in his local civic organization and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and traveling and especially spending time with his family. He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years Lydia, daughter-in-law Shirley Mara and grandson Michael Mara. Walter is survived by his son George Mara of Hertford, NC, daughter Donna and her husband Bill Swiderski of Egg Harbor Twp. And three grandchildren Tim Swiderski and his fiancé Angela of Mays Landing, Tara Swiderski of Melbourne, FL and Trisha Jones her husband Nate and great-grandson Brady of Hoboken, NJ. During his struggle with Alzheimer’s, Walter was lovingly cared for by Helena Debeck of South Amboy for whom the family is eternally grateful. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Linwood, NJ where friends may call after 10:00 AM. The Rite of Committal will be at Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery in Doylestown, PA. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated (PO Box 96001, Washington DC 26090-6011). Condolences will be received at www.evoyfuneralhome.com
